Organizations do track diversity metrics, yet struggle to quantify and track improvements in inclusion. Often relegated to the sidelines, diverse leaders in P&L and staff positions may struggle to be meaningfully involved in business and personnel decisions within their own organizations.

Elementary, middle school and high school students of different races who are just awakening to their own sense of self-worth and belonging are struggling with the in- and out-groups that define their social structures, with few inner resources to skillfully navigate their differences. Faculty, administrators and parents are reluctant or don’t know how to talk about race with each other, much less with students.
Situations that have been brought to CPL’s attention include:
- A black kindergartener in an elite school playing by herself because other kids think she looks different
- On the playing fields and in the classrooms of parochial and private schools, the daily use of the N-word being used by white students directly to African American kids as well as on social media
- White students who develop strong bonds with students of color being shunned by other white students
- Students of color confronted by daily microaggressions and ill-equipped to constructively respond and deflect negative interactions
